What Are Dentures and Partials?

Dentures are removable prostheses that resemble natural teeth and gums. Full dentures are more commonplace and replace an entire upper or lower arch of teeth. Partial dentures are designed to fill in gaps between the natural teeth.

Today’s modern dentures look like real teeth and are much more comfortable than dentures from the past. They are an affordable option for people who want to restore their smile quickly and effectively.

Who Is a Candidate for Dentures or Partials?

You may be a candidate for dentures if you are missing some or all of your teeth, and you struggle with chewing, speaking, and smiling around other people. Dentures may also be used temporarily while dental implants heal. Despite some commonly held beliefs, dentures are not just for the elderly. They can be an economical option for patients of any age with several missing teeth.

While there are other ways to replace missing teeth, dentures are a great option for people who are nervous about dental procedures and don’t want to undergo surgery to have a dental implant placed.

The Benefits of Dentures

Tooth loss can cause difficulty chewing, social embarrassment, and anxious or self-conscious thoughts, but dentures address these concerns. After a period of adjustment (as you get used to chewing and speaking with your new “teeth”), dentures should fit comfortably and feel stable in your mouth. You will be able to eat your favorite foods and speak confidently, knowing that your smile looks complete and natural.

Dentures don’t just provide cosmetic benefits. They provide support and structure to the mouth and jaw, which can reduce wear and tear on any remaining teeth. This can also reduce tension in the jaw and potentially alleviate issues, such as temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ).

Finally, dentures are an extremely cost-effective option and are often chosen by people who are budget conscious. That doesn’t mean dentures are cheap-looking – on the contrary, modern dentures look a lot more natural than the dentures you may remember your grandparents wearing. Today’s dentures are easy to clean and are very durable.

Fitting and Placing Dentures

The fitting and placement process for dentures varies depending on the type of dentures we have selected.

Immediate dentures are placed immediately following the removal of your natural teeth; they protect the tissues and reduce bleeding after tooth extraction. Immediate dentures may come in a full or partial set.

Conventional dentures are placed approximately 8-12 weeks after tooth extraction when the gum tissue at the extraction site has healed.

Fitting and placing conventional dentures usually requires several visits to our office. First, we take impressions and a wax bite to ensure the proper dimensions of the denture prosthesis. Next, we help you try on the denture to ensure proper color, shape, and fit. Lastly, the final denture is placed.
